Tonight was 'Bring a Friend to Dissection' night at the cadaver lab. Jordan is in the nursing program at BYU and is taking a dissection class so she invited me to tag along. I've never seen (or smelled) a cadaver so I thought, "what the heck" and went. I was actually excited all day for this new experience and I was not disappointed. It was very, very interesting. Plus, I'm toying with the idea of going back to school to be a dental hygienist, so I would have to take anatomy. I basically just wanted to make sure I could handle it.
I would have to work with cadavers in anatomy class, right? :)
My time in the lab was good - very educational. I wasn't super gung-ho about touching things at first, but I eventually did and even held some organs and other 'stuff.' It was a very eye-opening experience, to say the least. The smell did bother me, but I didn't get sick or anything.
My hair still smells like formaldehyde, which is pretty fantastic.
I'm really glad that I went, but quickly realized that there are good reasons I didn't go into medicine because I don't know if I could handle a lot of time with dead people to learn what I would need to know to help the living. The whole time Jordan and others were talking about the amazing things the human body does and how it all works together perfectly and while that was very interesting and cool to me, I mostly wondered about who these people were and what they were like. I guess I get too emotionally involved and would have a hard time being objective.
Anyway, gotta go - I need a shower.
